Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah, is an American rapper singer. Queen Latifah is an American actor, rapper and performer. Queen Latifah's parents are Lancelot and Rita Owens, both police officers. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher who taught at Irvington High School. Her father and mother separated when Latifah turned ten. Latifah, who was born and brought up within Newark New Jersey attended Catholic schools in Newark. Her stage name Latifah meaning delicate and very kind in Arabic was handed to her by her cousin at the age of she was just eight years old. Latifah has always been tall, standing 5'10" She was a strong forward for her high school basketball team. She sang "Home" from The Wiz in a performance in her high school. Latifah began to beatbox with the women's fresh rap group. Latifah was a part of in the Flavor Unit in its original form, which consisted of an MC team and DJ Mark The 45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King recorded the rap of Queen Latifah, aka Princess of the Posse. He then gave it to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music has signed Latifah following her hearing of the song. She released her first single Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
